Oregon’s Physician-Assisted Suicide Law

Joni Eareckson Tada’s Statement on Disability and Oregon’s Physician-Assisted Suicide Law

Ever since the 1990s when Oregon passed its Death with Dignity Act, I’ve been working to de-grease its slippery slope. Under the law, physicians may give lethal drugs to patients with terminal illnesses who want to end their lives. The law’s proponents have insisted it could only be offered to those who had 6 months or less to live, and was a safety valve when nothing else could be done to alleviate suffering. But not so anymore.

The Oregon Health Authority (which studies and keeps records on the Death with Dignity Act) now says, “the law is best seen as a permissive law… it does not compel patients to have exhausted all treatment options, or to continue current treatment.… If the patient decides they don’t want treatment, that is their choice.” In an eerie tone, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) said the law is “silent on whether the patient must exhaust all treatment options.”

This spells bad news for people with chronic conditions such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, ALS, or even diabetes. Many people with chronic conditions rely on medication or other supports to enable them to live for decades. But what if people with disabilities begin to despair of their condition? What if insurance runs out? Citing an example, the OHA said that if you are a diabetic in Oregon and decide to forgo insulin injections, you could qualify for a lethal prescription under the state’s physician-assisted suicide law.

It is true that no one with diabetes has yet taken advantage of this new interpretation of the law, but the door is now open, inviting any Oregonian despairing of his disabling condition to test the law’s new interpretation and request assisted suicide. Such cases are already successful in Canada and in Western Europe, showing how slick the slope is in Western industrialized nations.

This is one reason why I recently revised my book When Is It Right to Die? I wanted to give Christ-followers a keen understanding of the arguments surrounding physician-assisted suicide, as well as give them language for articulating a biblical worldview on life, no matter how disabled or elderly one’s life might be. People are not “better off dead than disabled,” and life is worth living until God decides it is time.

Christians can provide life-encouraging alternatives to assisted suicide by providing hands-on support to persons with disabilities who are despairing of their lives.

Christians can ascribe positive meaning to a person’s affliction, prevent social isolation, help them deal with depression, provide spiritual community, and, in short, be a friend. This is compassionate care; not the administration of lethal drugs.

In 1997 the US Supreme Court ruled that there was no inherent ‘right to die’ in the U.S. Constitution. But that did not stop states from creating legislation based on people’s perception of a “right” to die. Oregon was the first state to legalize physician-assisted suicide for mentally competent people with terminal illnesses. California, Colorado, Vermont and Washington also have enacted similar laws based on the Oregon model (Montana’s Supreme Court ruled that nothing in state law prevents physicians from helping terminally ill patients end their lives).

People who feel overwhelmed by their chronic medical conditions do not need assisted-suicide; they need treatment for depression, good pain management, social community, support, help, hope, and a purpose for living. Christians have the message that gives life meaning, and helps people grasp that life is worth living. I pray Christians will do all they can to expose the dangers behind this new and chilling interpretation of a terminal illness.

Helping People with Gender Confusion: Conference Videos

This is from the September 11, 2018 Family Foundation Summit in Richmond, VA

If you want to have greater compassion and wisdom to help “transgender” people find the truth about their God-given gender, I encourage you to watch these videos which include the following speakers!!

Rosaria Butterfield, author of The Gospel Comes With a House Key, is a brilliant former life-long, radical, activist lesbian college professor who describes a beautiful transformation to a heterosexual female identity through the love and hospitality of a pastor and his wife who had her over for dinner for two years each week. They were friends. That friendship changed her life and now she is married to a pastor.

Ryan Anderson of the Heritage Foundation, and author of When Harry Became Sally brought this subject into clearer focus with statistics and facts from the social sciences that opened our eyes to some new and helpful truths.

Bruce Ashford of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary addresses “Ministering in an Age of Gender Confusion”

Sean Maguire, Director of Grassroots for The Family Foundation, shares his personal testimony of growing up with same-sex attraction in a Christian family

Such Were Some of You: Here is a movie I found about the roots of homosexuality that also has some bearing on the transgender issues. It has testimonies of about 10 former gay & lesbian people that shed a lot of light on the roots of their struggles with sexual identity and sexual sins.

Revival Broke Out Near Historic Cane Ridge, KY on Pentecost Sunday 2018

Rick Curry is leading the meetings

I was just at Cane Ridge, Kentucky to visit the site of the 1801 Cane Ridge Revival meeting where 20,000 people came for three days and the Holy Spirit fell upon them so mightily that reports of it spread across the country and fanned the Second Great Awakening into a brush-fire that swept millions into the Kingdom!

While there, I spoke with Rick Curry about his revival meetings.  This is surely a sign–along with the other multi-week revivals going on in other places right now–that God is waking His Church to get ready for the BIG WAVE of revival–a Third Great Awakening across America that will also sweep the planet and hopefully bring in a billion souls or more!

Here is Rick Curry’s article in Charisma.

There has been prevailing intercession and profound prophetic utterance released in a myriad of settings as the current generation becomes increasingly desperate for revival. One consistent cry has been for the ancient wells of revival and awakening in the land to be opened once again and for the nation to encounter the manifest glory of God in the power of a pervasive move of God. Are ancient wells opening? Are you sounds of the early stages of awakening being heard in the land?

Since having the dream most commonly referred to as the “Appeal to Heaven Dream,” we have traveled the old trails of awakening and significant revivals in the nation. We have, like a multitude of others, cried out for God to come and heal the land. We have partnered with many ministries to visit once again the old paths of America’s early revivals in the wilderness. We traveled along the El Camino Real from the Southern border near El Paso, Texas all the way through New Mexico into the most northern portions of the state.

We were given a dream about visiting all of the original eight capital cities of the nation, and we sought to fulfill the word of the Lord concerning that. We have journeyed along the old Wilderness Trail, following the path of the Pioneers through the Cumberland Pass into Kentucky and the western front of the young expanding nation. However, recently we have experienced an unusual outpouring of the Spirit in what has now become a 16-week revival in Kentucky. This revival began just a few miles from the old Cane Ridge Meeting House in Bourbon County, Kentucky in an old church that was last remodeled in the 1850s.

Stoically sitting alongside a country road in Bourbon County, Kentucky is the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. Mt. Carmel began in 1818 when one of five men denounced from the pulpit of the Old Stoner Mouth Presbyterian Church for attending the Cane Ridge revival held a camp meeting on his farm. We came to Bourbon County to celebrate the 200th anniversary with this congregation on Pentecost Sunday and to speak at a regional gathering to be held at River of Life Ministries in Paris, Kentucky. We have been in revival ever since.

During the evening service at Mt. Carmel, as worship filled the old sanctuary, we heard a remarkable sound that seemed to reverberate throughout the entire sanctuary. I glanced up to look at Jennifer, and it was obvious that she and the minister sitting next to her had also heard the sound. It sounded as if every person in the sanctuary started simultaneously stomping their feet on the old wooden floors. I felt quickened in my spirit that it was the sound of the Lord coming upon the land. It sounded like many horses thundering upon the land.

The worship that night was a single psalmist worshiping on an upright piano, leading the congregation into wonderful adoration of the King of glory. She was wholly attentive to hosting the presence of the Lord in worship and inviting us to go a journey with her. We went.

The altars were filled with people at the conclusion of the service. The people had lined all the way up the aisles of the church for prayer to the doors at the back of the sanctuary. People were crying and laughing hysterically at the same time. You could see people lying on the floor or gathering in their pews to pray with one another.

The sound of jubilant breakthrough was resonating from the hearts of the people in that service, and it was as though we all knew revival was being birthed. A revival on old Kentucky soil that had witnessed a move of God at Cane Ridge, just a few miles away, was about to erupt again with the manifest glory of God.

During revival services over the last 15 weeks, we have seen pastors and leaders repenting, weeping and laughing in an outpouring of refreshing. We have seen people saved, delivered and many returning to the Lord surrendering their yielding hearts.

We have seen many miracles and hearings that are really stunning in this stage of the revival. There have been at least two documented cases of healing of cancer along with many other miracles and dramatic healing. In addition to pastors and people coming from all over Kentucky, we have also had ministers visit the revival from numerous states including Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma and New Jersey, to name a few. We now enter into week No. 16 with no end in sight.

Kentucky leaders are creating synergy and releasing strategy for Kentucky’s awakening. The Lord is summoning leaders to come together in humility, honor and the heart of the Father for a generational move of God all across the nation.

Are you ready to take your place?”

The Fires of Revival in 2018

The Holy Spirit Is Bubbling Up Across Mid-America!

God’s Spirit is continuing to fall on the United States of America and the fires of revival are spreading!

At the time of this article, the Greeneville Awakening is now going into its twentieth week, with no signs of stopping. In fact, on Friday night, the last night of week nineteen, when I was there, D.R. said “We are just getting started!” Over 600 people have given their lives to Christ under the tent. At least 30 states have been represented, coming from all over the country.

Up until a few weeks ago, these states were all states in the East. However, within the last few weeks, the revival fires have burned so bright that those from the West have made the trip, Utah and Washington now being represented under the tent! In addition to these states, over 300 churches have come together, churches spanning all denominations! The revival is now on the radio, broadcast all over the world, and the first day of the radio program, 27 different countries tuned in. It is estimated between 2,000-5,000 people gave their lives to Christ as a result of that one night, and it will be on the radio every night from now on!

Christ’s Fellowship in Georgia has been experiencing revival since February. It is not uncommon for more than 40 people to walk to the front and be baptized. For the past six months, physical healings, deliverance, and more than 500 baptisms have taken place during the Sunday night services. According to the pastor, “We had one woman come to pick up her sister from the service. She walked into the door, and she fell under the conviction and got baptized. It was amazing.” People have come from hundreds of miles away to experience what God is going in this congregation.

Around 100,000 people in Southern California gathered for the 29th annual SoCal Harvest from August 17-19.  Pastor and evangelist Greg Laurie spoke each night, placing special emphasis on California’s, and our nation’s, need for revival. More than 10,000 people responded to the nightly invitations to make a commitment to Christ.

A U.S. Army chaplain describes a revival that is occurring on a military base in Missouri. In one post, he writes, “Today, 380 soldiers came to salvation in Christ once and for all. Since March 11, 2018, we have seen 1,839 soldiers coming to Christ. God’s doing an unbelievable work through our military at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

A church in Corpus, Christi, Texas has seen an incredible move of God this summer. They planned four consecutive Wednesday meetings in July, and from the beginning it was obvious God was moving. The first Wednesday, over 100 people gave their lives to Christ and then the second Wednesday, an additional 100+ people came forward. “The following Wednesday, 200 people responded—many actually running to the altar.”

One thread to each one of these revivals is a hunger for God. The revival in Texas “first started when senior Pastor Mike Fehlauer developed a deep hunger to see more of God’s presence.” The staff joined with him in prayer that an awakening would take place. The revival in Georgia was birthed out of a 21-day church fast. Shortly after this fast, the pastor noted “God sat down in our building and rocked our world.” Prayer has also been a major part of Greeneville.

One of the things I learned when I was in Greeneville is that the property where the tent is has been heavily prayed over. A lady used to walk all over the property, praying that God would send revival. Not only did God answer that prayer, but God answered it right on that very property! The service we attended began with probably a thirty-minute season of prayer. This was not a perfunctory opening prayer, but a time when people from all over the congregation came to the front and were pleading for the presence of God. Later in the service, as D.R. was still preaching, people were walking up to the front, kneeling in prayer. I could hear groans and cries being uttered (Romans 8:26), people desperate to encounter God. By the end of the message, countless people were up front, crying out to God. Each night after the services, at 11:00, the men meet for prayer. In the morning, the women meet for prayer. This praying, this fasting, this desperation is a key to seeing God move and as the body of Christ in America cultivates this desperation, God is on the move!

Do Convicted Sex Offenders Live Near You?

Be Kind, but Be wise. Know where they live, work and study

This map shows where convicted sex offenders live, work and go to school in parts of South Hampton Roads.

I know this is a sensitive subject.

Two things need to be said: These folks need our compassion. Most were probably molested and so they became molesters. They all need to be born again, almost certainly need deliverance from evil spirits, be baptized and filled with the Spirit to help overcome their backgrounds.  Jesus died for them and jesus can give them a fresh start.

But our kids also need protection from being molested by those who are still addicted to sexual crimes.  Go to this website to find out where these folks live, work so you can be aware of those locations to protect your loved ones and to protect the sex offenders from unnecessary temptations if possible.

May God help churches to bring salvation, healing and deliverance to these folks.  There is a ministry devoted to helping sex offenders get back into life after prison.  It is a confidential ministry I can put you in touch with if you contact me.

How ‘Cosmo’ Destroys Women—And Why We Need to Limit Its Reach

Let's Also thank Walmart for doing that!

A girl who feels her only value is her sexual appeal (not her intelligence, quick wit, or artistic talent, for example) and views herself as merely a thing to be used for other's gratification can experience low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders.

Walmart has announced this week that Cosmopolitan magazine will no longer be flaunted to kids and adolescents in its checkout lines across the country.

This is welcome news for Victoria Hearst, founder of Cosmo Hurts Kids and the granddaughter of Cosmopolitan owner William Randolph Hearst.

It all began with a bad relationship.

In December 1995, Victoria Hearst was reeling from one when she said the sinner’s prayer and gave her life to Jesus.

Not only did Victoria let go of the relationship, she surrendered all of the plans she had for her life.

“God, I don’t know what I am doing anymore,” Victoria says on her website, recalling her prayer to the Lord. “You take the wheel. You drive. I’ll go wherever You lead.”

Fast forward to 2018.

The Lord has done a fruitful work in her life: Victoria is the founder and head of Praise Him Ministries, a non-denominational ministry that includes Praise Productions Christian Store and Ridgway Christian Center.

And, in her spare time and at her own expense, Victoria is on a crusade to get the word out about how Cosmopolitan‘s pornographic images and content are damaging to kids.

How Cosmo Lost Its Way

Victoria Hearst’s grandfather W.R. Hearst was the founder and head of the Hearst publishing empire until his death in 1951.

From humble beginnings with one newspaper—The San Francisco Examiner—in 1887, Hearst Communications has grown into a multifaceted corporation with 360 plus businesses.

One of its many media offerings is Cosmopolitan magazine.

In 1905, Victoria’s grandfather bought Cosmopolitan, then a family magazine devoted to women’s issues.

Victoria’s grandfather hired authors and journalists such as George Bernard Shaw to contribute to the magazine. A British playwright, Shaw wrote 62 plays over his lifetime and was the 1925 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

However, revenue started to slide at the magazine after W.R. Hearst’s death.

Victoria recalls, “As a child, I heard my father, Randolph Hearst, discussing the situation with Hearst executives. Should they discontinue publication or try to keep it alive?”

In 1965, they hired Helen Gurley Brown, author of a popular 1962 novel encouraging women to be liberated sexually and financially to be chief editor … and it was all downhill from there.

“That is when a ‘first-class family magazine’ turned into a sex rag,” concludes Victoria.

Victoria’s father passed away in 2000 but became a born-again Christian prior to his death.

Meanwhile, Cosmo stayed on its course of sexually explicit content.

Protecting Kids and Her Grandfather’s Legacy

Seeing the total stripping of moral fabric from the once-revered magazine has spurred Victoria into action.

As she states on her website, “William Randolph Hearst was not a perfect man, but I am sure that he would NEVER have allowed Cosmopolitan to become the PORNOGRAPHIC magazine that it is today.”

What Victoria is after is not to destroy the magazine. Rather, she would like it labeled as “adult material” so that it cannot be sold to anyone under 18.

Targeting Young Girls

The content described is bad enough on its own. But consider the target market: “Cosmo seduces underage girls into reading the magazine by putting teen and ‘tween’ idols on the cover and by printing articles listing the best colleges to attend to have sex,” says Victoria.

Does all of this sound like something you’d want you middle-school aged daughter to read?

We thought not!

The covers of Cosmopolitan magazine are on visible display at checkout lines and news stand aisles at your local drug store, and grocery store, where adults and children can readily see them … over and over again.

The October 2017 issue proudly proclaimed to offer “76 Sex Secrets” and other questionable content, for example.

Part of a Broader Issue

It’s not just Cosmo. Virtually all media monitored in multiple studies gave “ample evidence of the sexualization of women,” according to a 2007 American Psychological Association Task Force on the Sexualiztion of Girls report.

It’s everywhere you turn—from TV shows to the Internet, to movies and music, and of course, in advertising. And it’s in video games and media that are popular with kids.

Women are objectified and sexualized, and a narrow view of physical beauty is endlessly paraded in front of all of us.

What does this do to girls?

When girls are constantly exposed to media images sexualizing women, it leads them to view themselves (and all women) as sexual objects. Their value becomes centered on physical appearance rather than on achievement or character.

A girl who feels her only value is her sexual appeal (not her intelligence, quick wit or artistic talent, for example) and views herself as merely a thing to be used for other’s gratification can experience low self-esteem, depression and eating disorders.

The APA report suggests that it may even affect their career choices. How many of these women will pursue an engineering career or aim to be a cancer researcher or the next great IT company founder rather than a supermodel?

What does this do to all of us?

Girls aren’t the only ones who suffer from this inescapable, near-constant exposure to a very narrow ideal of female attractiveness. It can also make it hard for men to both find a partner who meets this standard and to experience true intimacy with their spouse.

More far-reaching effects can include a rise in sexual aggression, sexism and even the demand for child pornography.

Enough Is Enough!

Now more than ever, our nation is desperate for weapons to combat the onslaught of pornography in our society.

Offering a total renewal of the mind that leads to a life of peace and freedom, the Conquer Series is a powerful cinematic series that is helping thousands of men overcome pornography.

“This series has helped change my life. The healing it has caused has revolutionized my relationship with my wife, kids, and people at church. I thank the Lord every day for this,” said Matthew Cook in his review of the Conquer Series. “The only thing I regret is not having this info 15 years ago.”

Teenagers aren’t too young, with parental guidance, to deal with this issue. Sandra Barnes says, “Thank you, guys, for making this program. My teenage sons have watched it and we have all learned so much!”

Tammy Miller from Canton, Ohio, agrees:

“I absolutely love this disc series!!! This is how good it is: our 19- and 17-yr. old sons exist in their phones-texting, listening to music. Not 15 minutes in, we saw them put down their phones, take the earbuds out of their ears and watch intensely. Each time we put in the DVDs, the phones went down and they watched and took in all what was being said…EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT series!”

The enemy wishes to destroy society through attacking us from all angles in the area of our sexuality. The Conquer Series will help you armor yourself and those you love for God in this increasing worldly battlefield we live in.

Winning the War on Sex Trafficking (against High Tech Opposition)

Join us in a conversation with Patrick Trueman, president of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, as we discuss a major legislative victory in Congress.

Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 12:00 pm (EDT)

Dial 515-739-1247; enter code 475246#

Something unthinkable just a year or two ago — something miraculous — has happened in Washington, D.C.  The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly last Wednesday, 97-2, to overturn a series of U.S. court cases that sheltered online sex traffickers like websites Backpage and craigslist.  In the most tortured reasoning, courts have ruled that those websites, and dozens more like them, had the right to promote sex trafficking and the federal and state governments could do little about it.

But the bill’s supporters, despite heavily funded opposition from Google and other top tech companies, prevailed, and the bill is going to the president’s desk, where he is expected to sign it.

Patrick Trueman is a former Chief of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Criminal Division at the U. S. Department of Justice from 1988 to 1993.

While at DOJ, Mr. Trueman supervised the prosecution of child sex crimes, child pornography, and obscenity. He managed an office of twenty of prosecutors and support staff, and worked with the nation’s 93 United States Attorneys to initiate and coordinate federal prosecutions.

During his 41 years as a lawyer, he litigated cases at all levels of the federal system, including at the U.S. Supreme Court. He has been an advisor to many municipalities on First Amendment law and has helped draft ordinances to end or curb the impact of sexually oriented businesses such as pornography shops, strip clubs, and related establishments. A recognized international expert, Mr. Trueman has traveled to Europe, South America, the Middle East, and other areas to speak about human trafficking or the effects of television sex and violence on the family.

As president of NCOSE, Patrick Trueman spearheads efforts to change corporate policies by publicizing a Dirty Dozen List. This aggressive project educates company executives, galvanizes public attention and spurs popular actions to defend human dignity. Under his leadership, NCOSE has produced policy improvements at a wide range of notable institutions, including Google, Wal-Mart, the Department of Justice, Verizon, the Federal Communications Commission and more.

In 2015, Mr. Trueman established the NCOSE Law Center, which serves as a resource for legal efforts to combat illegal pornography, sexually oriented businesses, and to bring innovative lawsuits against public institutions facilitating sexual exploitation. In 2010, he founded PornHarmsResearch.com to provide peer-reviewed research and talking points on the harms of pornography.

On a global level, Mr. Trueman leads NCOSE’s Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation, an international coalition that boasts nearly 300 organizations and academic experts who are committed to sharing strategies and resources for combating public & private harms caused by pornography.

Mr. Trueman served as chief of staff to a Member of the U.S. Congress. From 1976 to 1982, he was Executive Director and General Counsel to Americans United for Life, a national public interest law firm in Chicago.

He lives just outside Washington, D.C., and is married to Laura Clay Trueman.  Laura and Pat Trueman have three children:  Patrick, Claire and Elizabeth.

Doris Wagner’s Deliverance Ministry

The Wife of Dr. Peter Wagner is a Gifted and Very Seasoned Minister of Deliverance--Especially With Leaders

Dear praying friends:
My big news is that I am planning on starting up a deliverance ministry once again after my return from Florida later on this month. Chuck Pierce has graciously given me a lovely little office at the Global Spheres building for that purpose.
I especially hope to minister to pastors and church leaders who have no safe place to go for ministry of this kind. I maintain total confidentiality.
I need your help in getting this word out. The only cases I hesitate to work with are mental cases, such as the DID, schizophrenia, and the like. There are people much more skilled than I to whom I refer such cases. However, God has gifted me in areas of addictions, lust, rejection, healing of memories, victimization. and ordinary bondages so rampant these days. I ask those who want prayer to fill out a questionnaire that gives me clues as to how to go about ministry. So I need people to contact me. My email is easy. Click here to email me.
Gratefully in Christ,

Doris
PS–I have known Dr. Wagner and Doris for decades. Dr. Waagner was one of my professors at Fuller Seminary. I highly recommend Doris!
You can read about how she ministers by getting her book, How to Cast Out Demons–A Beginner’s Guide.

Christian Denominations in Virginia Need to Apologize to Virginia Tribes

For 20th Century Offenses

Leonard Crow Dog, a Lakota elder and highly-regarded activist, left, places his hand over Gen. Wesley Clark Jr.’s head during a forgiveness ceremony for veterans at the Four Prairie Knights Casino & Resort on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016.

I know some really good folks might not think so, but I respectfully disagree for several reasons:

1. I know of only two Christian apology services with Virginia Native Americans in the last 20 years: One at Williamsburg with the Spanish Ambassador and one at the 400th Anniversary of the Colony on the beach in Virginia Beach in 2007.  I was at the one on the beach that Rock Church hosted.  At the 2007 beach event, no specific offenses were repented of that I heard over the sound system. Pastor Marty O’Rourke washed Chief Ann Richardson’s feet as an act of repentance and honor.

The other one, at William and Mary, concerned the events surrounding the killing of the Spanish Jesuits by the tribe in February of 1671 and some other early events.  ( I was involved as an advisor in both apologies, by the way. This is something I have felt strongly about for many years. My book talks about that.)

No Christian leader or denomination has ever publicly apologized for what a Presbyterian Elder named Walter Plecker did. The hideous Plecker enforcement of the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 which he helped to draft effectively stripped Virginia Native Americans of their identity as Indians as they sought marriage licenses for 50 years. They could only register as white or black. Therefore, they all had to declare “Black” since they were not fully white. This law was an extension of the Virginia laws against mixed marriages  —another set of laws all Virginians should be ashamed of, too. White supremacists got them all passed. Plecker admired Hitler and wrote congratulatory letters to his staff.

As a result of Plecker not allowing Indians to register as Indians, they cannot prove their ancestry. There are currently 566 federally recognized Indian tribes, only one of which are from Virginia–and that just got approved. The other 10 Virginia tribes have lost all the valuable federal benefits that the other 566 tribes have long enjoyed.

Walter Plecker was a physician, eugenicist and avowed white supremacist–and a devout Presbyterian Elder who helped start churches in Virginia. Most of the Virginia legislators and government officials who enforced these terrible laws would have claimed to be Christians in this Bible Belt state.  Hundreds of pastors and churches probably knew of these laws over the 50-year history of their enforcement.  Clearly, Christians have sinned against our Native American tribes in Virginia by using, encouraging or allowing such hateful laws to be passed and enforced for five decades.

I think that all the denominations that were here in Virginia during the 20th century need to take some responsibility for allowing or encouraging such laws. They never have…yet despite the Governor Mark Warner’s 2002 apology for these hideous laws, especially forced sterilization.

The Canadian government and the Australian governments have both publically apologized for serious 20th-century offenses against their native tribes. Why not us?  Why not the Christain denominational leaders whose members perpetrated these awful offenses againts our tribes?

2.  I would bet that hardly any Christians in Hampton Roads knows of any public apologies to our tribes from Christian leaders.  Only a small number of people are aware of them. I think it would honor our tribes to have those previous apologies made very public.  I think it is somewhat hollow to honor VA tribes on April 17th in Richmond with a statue to our tribes without such public apologies from the state and from Christian denominations for the offenses we have committed against our tribes for 400 years. As you may recall, some Christian denominations and the State of Virginia did apologize for the slavery issue.

Many of my friends love our tribes and want to see them honored as they should be. The Jamestown Colony would probably not have survived with the food assistance of the Native Americans–some provided by the intercession of Pocahontas. Those tribes helped found America. For me, it is not only those motives but the principles of 2 Sam 21 that makes me sure that such public apologies need to be very public and detailed.

May God heal our state and nation even more through such acts of repentance! May our Virginia Tribes be able to bless our state and nation even more despite all we have done to injure them in the 20th century and before.

Virginia and our nation need the blessing of our Virginia tribes!  That’s the lesson of 2 Samuel 21.
