Getting IRS Non-Profit Status Just Got Easier!

For decades, new nonprofit organizations (charities, ministries, etc.), in order to obtain 501(c)(3) tax-exemption from the IRS, had to prepare and file Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption. This is a long (12 or more pages) and complicated form, typically requiring weeks (if not months) of preparation.  In the last few years, however, the IRS has begun using Form 1023EZ for certain smaller nonprofits.  As its name suggests, this is a much shorter form (one page!), much easier to prepare, with a smaller filing fee as well, AND the IRS turns them around very quickly — a few weeks or months, as opposed to a year or more for the 1023.  The 501(c)(3) tax-exemption you get is the same.  Generally, this form can be used by new nonprofits that anticipate having less than $50,000 in annual revenue (donations, etc.) in their first three years of existence.  This is not unusual for many new organizations.  To learn more, go to

IRS.gov, and look up Form 1023EZ.
